Play Observation Form

This form will help you determine what type of play is going on with your students.

Organized by time of day to determine if certain play occurs at certain times throughout the day.

Types of play include parallel, associative, and cooperative.  Not included: solitary play (normally occurs in infants and toddlers).

Parallel play is when a child plays next to another child, without interacting, while playing in a similar fashion.

Associative play is when interactions start to occur, but there is no planning or group goals.

Cooperative play occurs when children begin communicating their purpose (ex:  Playing House - "I'm the mommy and you're my daughter...").
